I use Arch, but it breaks stuff too. If you want something super stable I'd so go with straight Debian.
Yes,
sorry, my second post started as a response to reed026 and I only
quickly read yours before responding to both of you. I know Debian
"straight" is the best choice in terms of stability. I only mentioned
the testing version because I know that the software in Debian stable
is usually quite "old", and in my case it's very convenient for me to
have the most recent versions of the P2P programs I use quite a lot and
I had just checked and saw that Debian testing had recent enough
versions. Anyway... Debian testing's recently created image
would not install (like the last time I tried), Debian stable installs
but won't display graphics with my Nvidia card on my widescreen
monitor, and the two methods I tried to solve this last problem didn't
work... As I usually read, Debian seems to be a good choice when
it comes to servers but not the best one for the regular home user.
That's why I mentioned Debian-derived distros, that I know are usually
based on Debian testing (that, like I said, has more recent software)
to which new tools are usually added to make the distros more
user-friendly, which ends up making this same distros unofficial Debian
"Home Editions". Like I read in an early review of Ubuntu, I
guess what I'm looking for is a Debian polished for end-users. And I
can see there are several. Seems like I have quite some testing to do...

I subscribe to much of what is said in the article. I
too am very disappointed with the new release of "Buguntu" (either the
worse, or one of the worse) and have been seriously considering
switching to another distro. I've stuck with Ubuntu so far because I
find the merging of the main user and the root user to be much more
practical. But if I have to do without that convenience for a less
buggy experience, than so be it, I guess. I don't like distros that
use .rpm packages because I don't like to see or digitalize any
corporation's initials every time I deal with packages, so I would like
to stick with a Debian-derived distro. I've tested all the main
distros some years ago, twice, only to come back to Ubuntu everytime,
mainly because it was the only one that would automatically correctly
configure my sound and graphics. I happen to have quite some free
time at the moment to make some tests again. But can anyone here who
has been testing different distros recommend me already a good, and
above-all stable, Debian-derived one?

Those
are not police officers. They're private security guards. The word on
the back of one of the thugs is "PROTECTAS". The Portuguese police uses
the word "POLICIA".
The report is from a Portuguese Bilderberg-owned TV news channel called "SIC NOTÍCIAS".
I've translated what is said in it:
(00s) "...of
incentive to the referee. He just wanted to say that his family
supported José Fonseca, the Portuguese referee of the match. That's
when security went inside the field. Away from the natural habitat, the
four man dressed in black, started to beat the one dressed in white."
(23s) "Suddenly, blue, red, green ones joined the white and things turned black..."
(49s) "For
ten minutes, the security guards received the other side of the coin.
The good sense of some adepts and the quick intervention of the players
saved itself, to try to cool down the problem."
(1m09s) "This
security guard stayed unconscious for some minutes. Shortly after, he
got out on his own foot, but still with help. The Benfica players, also
with lost temper, and Giovanni Trapattoni, hearing the explanations
from the many adepts that invaded the field... At the end, there were
no detentions, there was yes the party of the Benfica adepts and the
passage of the security guards through the hospital."

Globalization and the plan for NWO / Fluoridation / Re: Non-Fluoride toothpaste

ya
know, there is no medicinal value to toothpaste, its just flavours and
filler. you don't need to put anything on yer toothbrush.
just use water on yer toothbrush, its the physical brushing that
keeps teeth clean, not what u put on the brush. other then being
a breath freshener, there is no need for any toothpaste of any
kind.
That's true. Toothpaste is not necessary. http://www.hesperian.org/assets/wtnd/WTND_Chapter_17_pdf.phpHowever,
I think it's a good idea to use it when we can, for the same reason we
use soap to wash our hands, and I guess to soften the rubbing, and
therefore, prevent damage to the gums. If you ever come to
Portugal, look for an orange pack. It's the only one I know of that is
not fluoridated and it's relatively easy to find.

Globalization and the plan for NWO / Technology / Re: "Libertarians" attacking free software adovcates as radicals/extremists
|
on: 31 October 2009, 23:17

Chemicalrain said it well. I don't think any "Libertarian" can speak for all in this case. GNU/Linux,
as it was also very well said in a documentary, is to a great extent,
one example of "Socialism in action". More specifically, Communism in
action - people collaboratively working for the "common good", without
worrying about receiving an adequate and differentiated reward in
return, and everyone taking whatever they want from what is produced. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gift_economyhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anarchist_communism#Example_societies_through_historyFor
that reason, some people who are fiercely in favor of a free market
economy might dislike it in terms of principle. But like it is said in
the slashdot article, GNU/Linux, although being to a great extent an
example of one type of Socialism in action, is not incompatible with a
free market economy, and can be, and is, used by some people to sell
their services and make a profit. As the GNU/Linux experience
has shown, socialist and free market modes of production and
distribution are not mutually exclusive, and can be combined into
mutually beneficiary mixtures.

I've only tried a few Portuguese distributions, but yes, I can confirm that the ones I've tried were very good.
About
Linux Mint, you might be right. I had read about it on this forum
before and I must not have checked it well, since I was not even aware
it was based on Ubuntu. From what I've seen better, the GNOME version
seems to me to be making the same "mistake" (in my opinion) as KDE by
adding extra functionalities that end up complicating instead of
simplifying the OS. (As for the other desktop environments, I can't
comment, since I don't use them and, therefore, can't make a
comparison.) But I'll have to try it for myself before saying anything
more. Maybe for the newcomer it ends up being more simple, I don't
know. But you might be right. Thanks for the correction.

Since
this is a pro-linux discussion, can someone tell me which flavor of
linux is the closest to windows and capable of playing even newer
windows games?
I mean simplest to use, with the least need for the typing...and / or a linux version that would include a linux tutorial??
I
understand the intimate details have to be tweaked from a text prompt,
but the first time I tried linux I could hardly use it beyond the start
menu equivalent nothing worked, so I was like 'even if it's better at
least I can use windows'
Thanks.
bmanmcfly: The most user-friendly distro out there is www.ubuntu.com. I
learned my GNU/Linux basics years ago from a Debian manual, but I'm
sure there are better introductions out there by now. The Ubuntu site
has some documentation, including an introduction to people who are
migrating from Windows. Maybe that's a good start. The
configuration operations are becoming ever more automatic, graphical
and simple to do. And for the ones that still have to be made from the
terminal there are usually good tutorials available in the help forums. My first GNU/Linux experience was quite awful also ,
but it was back when it was starting to evolve. Everything has
progressed quite a bit since then and I think now is a good time for
anyone with a bit of patience to start seriously considering this
alternative.

Linux
doesn't really have any good wordprocessing software. OpenOffice is a
joke...and it doesn't even work on my current install...just crashes
when I load it up. I am thinking of going to Gentoo or Tiny7...
I
haven't use the OpenOffice Word Processor much, but it has been enough
for my needs. And it is surely much better than the Microsoft Word I
used back in high-school for scientific reports and such. Yes, it was
by now quite a long time ago, but if I managed to do what I had to back
then with MS Word, I guess I would also be able to with today's OO Word
Processor. Maybe it is not as advanced as MS Word, but hey, it surely
has a much better quality-price ratio and I guess it will always be
able to follow Microsoft's steps with some lag. Not a problem for me.
I'm not in a hurry for the latest functionalities. If it's a software-related problem, the crashing part might be because of a bad package choice or combination made by your specific distro. Try others.

***THE MAIN BOARDS - Welcome to the Prison Planet Forum*** / General Discussion / Elections in Portugal TODAY: Bilderberg Club still in charge!
|
on: 28 September 2009, 07:40

Coincidently, there were also legislative elections in Portugal today. And the result couldn't be better for the NWO. This is what the most wise Portuguese people has voted for: The
PS (Socialist Party), which was the one in power, and the PSD (Social
Democrat Party), which is the one who alternates with the PS, are the
ones who are Bilderberg-controlled for sure[1]. The CDS-PP
(Social Democratic Center-Popular Party, that claims to represent the
"Christian Democrats") made a few years ago a coalition again with the
PSD to form government and has, together with the PS and PSD, voted in
favor of the Lisbon Treaty, which was not subject to a referendum, as
promised by the PS, and that was, therefore, ratified by the Parliament. The BE (Leftist Bloc) are mainly trotskyists and are pro-European. The
CDU (Unitarian Democratic Coalition) is the usual coalition with which
the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) presents itself for the elections
together with its puppet party, the Ecologist Party The Greens, is of
Stalinist tradition and the only one that is against the EU. Take your pick... (There
were other very small parties, that didn't manage to elect any
representative, of which four or so are news ones that recently
appeared.) As usual, the biggest percentage, corresponds to the people who didn't vote. --- 1. http://babelfish.yahoo.com/translate_url?doit=done&tt=url&intl=1&fr=bf-home&trurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.semanario.pt%2Fnoticia.php%3FID%3D2574&lp=pt_en&btnTrUrl=Translate

[Mentioned somewhere else in this forum. I made a google search and found one most interesting web page about it.] "Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0800026/http://www.flu.gov/news/birdfluinamerica.htmlABC TV Movie: Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America
On
Tuesday, May 9, 2006 at 8 p.m., the ABC television network aired a
made-for-TV movie titled "Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America." The
movie follows an outbreak of the H5N1 avian flu virus from its origins
in a Hong Kong market through its mutation into a pandemic virus that
becomes easily transmittable from human to human and spreads rapidly
around the world.
The Department of Health and Human Services
prepared a Viewer's Guide and some anticipated Questions and Answers to
provide factual information for viewers of the movie.(...) Viewer's Guide
*The
ABC Movie "Fatal Contact: Bird Flu in America" is a movie, not a
documentary. It is a work of fiction designed to entertain and not a
factual accounting of a real world event.
*There is no influenza pandemic in the world at this time.
*Also,
it is important to remember that H5N1 avian influenza is almost
exclusively a disease of birds. The H5N1 virus has not yet appeared in
the U.S.
*Should the H5N1 virus appear in the U.S., it does not mean the start of a pandemic.
*An
additional point to remember is that the next influenza pandemic could
be substantially less severe than what the movie depicts or that
occurred in 1918. For example, the influenza pandemics of 1957/58 and
1968/69 caused so much less illness and death than did the 1918/19
pandemic that many Americans at that time did not distinguish them from
seasonal influenza and were unaware that a pandemic was underway.
*While
the movie does serve to raise awareness about avian and pandemic flu,
we hope it will inspire preparation - not panic. There are steps
individuals, families and communities can take to prepare. You can keep
a supply of food and medicines on hand in case you have to stay home,
you can practice good public health measures like frequent hand washing
and staying home when sick. There is good information available on www.pandemicflu.gov.
*The
film does depict scenarios that could unfold should a severe pandemic
ever develop, including limited availability of antivirals and vaccines
as well as the potential for disruption of supplies, medicines and
other essential services.
*The film also illustrates the
expected months-long delay in developing an effective vaccine against a
pandemic strain of influenza once it emerges. This is why, at the
President's request, the Congress approved funding for the Department
of Health and Human Services to make significant financial investments
to improve the technology for vaccine development and to build up our
domestic vaccine production capacity, to ensure more rapid availability
of vaccine for the population in a pandemic.
*The film
highlights an important aspect of planning - individual and community
planning and cooperation that will be so vital to sustaining
communities and neighborhoods during an extended wave of an influenza
pandemic. HHS has developed an extensive set of planning documents,
including planning checklists for businesses, schools, health care
providers, community organizations and states as well as an individual
and family planning guide. All of these materials are available at www.pandemicflu.gov.
*While
the H5N1 virus has not yet appeared in the U.S., and there is no
influenza pandemic in the world at this time, it is important for all
Americans to be informed about this potential public health threat and
some of the steps individual Americans can take to protect themselves
and their families in the event of a pandemic.

Another TV series I heard Alex mentioning once... Boy... this one I won't even comment... "Jericho" (TV series) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jericho_(TV_series) Synopsis
First Season
The
storyline centers on the residents of Jericho, a small, rural Kansas
town, in the aftermath of nuclear attacks on 23 major cities in the
contiguous United States. The series begins with a visible nuclear
detonation of unknown origin in nearby Denver, Colorado, and a loss of
power and modern communications, effectively isolating Jericho. Later,
power is restored to Jericho by what is alluded to as the efforts of
the U.S. government, but soon after, an electromagnetic pulse (EMP)
disables all electronics. Several themes regularly addressed in the
show included the gathering of information, community identity, public
order, limited resources, the value of family, hardships of fatherhood
and internal and external threats. The show also features several
mysteries involving the backgrounds of major characters, the
perpetrators of the attack, and the extent of damage to the United
States and its government.
The pivotal character in this story
is Jake Green, the 32-year-old son of Mayor Johnston Green. Jake Green
fled the town of Jericho 5 years earlier when he became mixed up with
the wrong people and involved in questionable activity. Jake briefly
returns home to claim his inheritance before becoming stranded as a
result of the catastrophe. After a somewhat awkward return home and a
tense reunion with his father, Jake steps up to become a leader in
Jericho, fighting to protect the town and its citizens. As the people
of Jericho struggle to survive in a changed world, most remain unaware
that one of the newest residents, Robert Hawkins, knows a lot more
about the attacks than he lets on.
Second season
The
Allied States of America's military forces have since restored order to
Jericho and its surrounding region, putting an abrupt end to the
conflict between Jericho and its rival town, New Bern. As a sense of
normality returns to town, the plot shifts away from the day to day
survivalist issues facing Jericho's inhabitants, to life and political
intrigue under the ASA government.
Known only to Hawkins and a
select few, the September attacks were neither a foreign nor domestic
terrorist act, but a conspiracy of unknown perpetrators within the
highest level of the former government. Hawkins must calculate his
every move to avoid capture, to piece together the trail of evidence,
and ultimately, to bring the truth to light before the conspiracy's
mastermind buries it forever.
Meanwhile, Jericho's residents
deal with the reality of the Cheyenne-based ASA government. Initially
welcomed as saviors, the government's military and mercenary agents
transform life in Jericho into a repressive police-state. When a
J&R contractor kills a Jericho woman to conceal his embezzlement,
the town is put on the edge of open revolt.
Hawkins makes
contact with Jake, and the two make it to the Republic of Texas embassy
in Cheyenne with critical evidence (the only undetonated bomb from the
September attacks) with the ASA's military right behind them. The
Republic is considered the swing state in the struggle for power
between the Eastern United States and the Allied States, and the
ambassador manages to secure a small jet to carry Jake, Hawkins, and
the device to Texas. While in-flight, two ASA fighter jets intercept
Jake and Hawkins, determined to keep them from turning over the nuclear
evidence. At the last second, right as the two ASA fighters fall back
to open fire when Jake refuses to turn around to be escorted back to
Cheyenne, two Texas fighters appear and shoot down the ASA planes. Jake
and Hawkins make it to Texas with the evidence, and Hawkins ominously
intones that the Second American Civil War was always coming, and that
the two of them have made history by giving the United States a
fighting chance in the war to come.
